| On 1st September 2001
the ten Regional Mangers – Referees took up their full-time posts at The Football
Association. They worked from home in their respective regions to provide a direct link
between The Football Association in London, and the local County Football Associations.
They work closely with ATT’s (Area Training Teams) to deliver training required as a
criteria for promotion in addition to a wide variety of programmes for all Referees –
but particularly those at level 5 and below. The responsibilities of the Regional Managers: 1. To support the County Football Associations within their area. 2. To look after the needs of approximately 3,500 referees in their area. 3. Promoting the national strategies and initiatives, namely:
4. Ensure equality of opportunity across the country. 5. Drawing on experienced referees to act as role models. 6. Encourage and support activities that seek to increase the numbers of referees. |

This was an exciting development in The Football Association’s approach to refereeing - both in terms of support and enhancement. However, we will still depend on the many instructors, assessors, mentors and administrators to train and expand or referee numbers and continue to provide the support throughout a referee’s career.
